The city of Brig is located in the sunny Oberwallis at the foot of the Simplon Pass. At the pivot of international transportation routes Brig is a good starting point for excursions into the area. The beautiful historic town center with its medieval buildings and homely inns entice guests to linger. Brig boasts with its Stockalper Palace one of the most significant barock palacial builings in Switzerland. The history of Brig is closely tied to the Simplon Pass, one of the most beautiful alpine routes in the region which starts at the city's gates. In the 19th Century Napoleon had an alpine road built through the Simplon for military purposes which became the first man-made alpine road. Brig is the ideal starting point for excursions to Zermatt or Saas Fee. Brig also lies on the route of the famous Glacier Express which connects Zermatt with St. Moritz. To the south Brig is also the most northern boarder train station of the Simplon train tunnel to Italy. To the east it connects to Goms and the Furka Pass in central Switzerland, the Grimsel Pass in the Bernese Oberland and the Ticino Neufen Pass.
