About Grindelwald - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Grindelwald - ski resort with unmistakeable charm!
Framed by the breathtaking backdrop of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau, at the foot of the Eiger's north face, lies the lovely Grindelwald. The weather-beaten wooden houses bestows a special charm on the mountain climbing village. The Jungfrau Top ski region offers everything the skiing heart desires, with 206 kilometres of piste and snow security up to 2,970 m. Grindelwald and Wengen are traditional World Cup locations, and the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria) became famous as the shooting location of a James Bond films. From Grindelwald you can travel by train past the ski region Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), the highest train station in Europe. Top events, such as the "World Snow Festival", the Skicross Worldcup or the "Eiger Bike Challenge" take place here and undermine the diversity of this "Best of the Alps" resort.
Ski"The Grindelwald-Wengen" lift pass covers the Grindelwald/First and Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen ski areas with a total of 165 km of piste (incl. ski routes) and 35 lifts. "First", with its broad selection of easier pistes and an especially designated 20 mph zone, is well suited for beginners. The area is also an insider tip for snowboarders. The "White Elements" snowpark makes the hearts of freestyle fans beat faster. The "First-Egg-Bort-Grindelwald" piste, at a length of 6 km and height difference of 1,118 m is demanding even for experienced skiers, and counts as one of the most difficult pistes in the region.
The Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen area is one of Switzerland's most beloved, and is above all famous for the 4.2 km long "Lauberhorn" world cup piste. Beginners also get their full money's worth on the broad pistes.
For those who aim even higher, we recommend the "Jungfrau" ski pass, with which 206 km of piste at altitudes of up to 2,970 m are at your disposal. On the Schilthorn mountain, you'll find slopes of the most varying degrees of difficulty, a number of deep snow areas, the "Murren-Schilthorn" fun park and much more.
Après ski is a top priority here. When the day's skiing nears its end, it's time to meet at the large teepee on the "kleinen Scheidegg". After a chat, a cool drink or a mulled wine, you can all hit the slopes one last time to make the final run into the valley. Apres ski atmosphere can be found in the "Genepi Bar" or in the "Spycher Bar". In the valley there is further the "Espresso Bar" or the "Gepsi Bar" and of course the "Mescalero" or the "Plaza Disco" where you can dance the night away.
For non-skiers there are 100 km of winter hiking trails. Further there are 5 different toboggan runs in Grindelwald - one with 8 km length, or the 15 km long run "Big Pintenfritz". In the sports centre itself there are various activities on offer: from indoor pool, via high-rope parcours and sauna complex to ice rink with Curling facilities.
Cross-country fans will find their spot in Grindelwald: enjoy Grindelwald's 17 km of trail (approx.), including 7.5 km of skating track. The longest trail, over 7.5 km long, is a circuit starting above Mettenberg. You can also enjoy discovering the high-altitude trail in Bussalp (3 km long at 1,800 m) and the floodlit trail near the glacier canyon (1 km at 1,000 m). Use of the cross-country trails has to be paid locally.
Further 15 km of trail are located in the nearby Lauterbrunnen Valley, including 6 km of skating trail (payable locally).
