Lucerne is a city in central Switzerland with a population of 60,274 inhabitants (31 December 2003), the capital of the canton of Lucerne. The city is situated on Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee).
There is a foundation document of the city, but it is mentioned in 840 as "Luciaria", the name comes from a monastery of St. Leodegar, founded around the year 730.
Opening the road through St. Gotthard Pass in the thirteenth century made Lucerne into an important trading center. Acquired by the Habsburgs in 1291, he joined the Swiss Confederation in 1332. Lucerne was the capital of the Swiss Republic in 1798.
Reuss River flows into the lake, which is why there are several bridges in the city. The most famous is the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a wooden bridge 204 meters long, built in 1333, although it had to be replaced in 1993 after a fire. Tower Bridge passes octagon-shaped water (Wasserturm), a thirteenth-century fortification. Bridge with its Tower is the city emblem.
Swiss Transport Museum is a museum impressively large, with exhibits from all areas of transport, including locomotives, wagons, automobiles, ships and aircraft.
Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne, the lake was built by Jean Nouvel. The Center is one of the most important concert halls in the world (sound: Russell Johnson). Every year in late summer, there is the famous Lucerne festival of classical music.
Lucerne is one of the most visited destinations in Switzerland. The city is known for its attractive urban landscape and Chapel Bridge. The historic center of town - very picturesque, is the pedestrian area, small enough size to be visited on foot. From Lucerne you can make excursions on Lake Lucerne steamer or train can climb one of the pre-alpine peaks.
