About Saas Fee - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Saas-Fee - pearl of the Alps!
The run through the Saas Valley, with its deep ravines and steep mountain slopes, is very impressive. In the heart of the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps, the road winds up to the resort entrance at 1,800 m. Here you have to leave your own car behind and travel with the free local bus, an electric car or on foot to the resort. The former mountain farmer village at the foot of the “Dom” (4,545 m) has developed into a lively and yet traditional winter sports resort with tons of flair and a wide palette of shops and entertainment options.
From the village, you can take one of several gondolas directly into the ski area. The Saas Valley’s most famous lift, the standing cable car “Metro Alpin”, starts at approx. 3,000 m and brings you up to an altitude of 3,500 m in just a few minutes. There you can enjoy a fantastic view of the mountain panorama and, on a clear day, even see the lights of Milan, from the world’s highest rotating restaurant. A level lower you will also find the entrance to the 5,000 m² ice pavilion, which, with a constant temperature of -1°C, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the centuries-old Fee Glacier.
In addition to skiing, you can take advantage of all sorts of options in Saas-Fee, e.g. open-air bars with loungers at the foot of the pistes or cosy and traditional restaurants in the resort centre, as well as a lively nightlife and various activities.
SkiThe lift pass "Destinationspass" gives you access to 147 kilometres of piste and 42 lift systems in the whole of Saastal (see ski region). In the local ski area of Saas-Fee, 100 km of piste in all levels of difficulty are offered, giving you limitless fun on the pistes.
The pistes in Saas Valley are able to be used the whole winter, right through from November until Easter: Due to its extremely high altitude, snow security is guaranteed! The valley experiences heavy snowfall and particularly long-lasting sunshine especially late in spring from mid-March.
Beginners are offered ideal conditions on the easy, wide and excellently prepared glacier pistes here. Moreover, they can use 3 special beginner lifts on the outskirts of the area. Cracks will also be challenged and get their money's worth - under the glacier, the "Weiße Perle" and "National" attract experts for some unforgettable and spectacular off-piste fun. The area under the "Längfluh" chairlift attracts fans of unprepared slope moguls, and the former World Cup slope Plattjen, in the piste "Galen", still poses a challenge. A further highlight is the 14 km long "Panorama" run from the 3,500 m high "Mittelallalin Felskinn" to Saas-Fee at 1,800 m. Carvers will enjoy excellently prepared pistes in their territory under the glacier. Free stylers can take advantage of a freshly shaped half-pipe and the boarder cross. Popular night skiing can be taken advantage of once a week, when the pistes in Saas-Grund and Saas-Balen are lit in the evening.
In Saas-Fee you will be welcomed to aprés ski when you reach the end of the slope in the valley. Various bars, such as the "Fee-Iglu-Bar" for instance, directly next to the Hotel Imseng, or the "Black Bull Bar" with it's cosy wooden terrace invite you to party with music, drinks and a great amount of fun. The "Popcorn!" can be found in two locations throughout the resort: the shop where you can find the newest ski and snowboard trends, and the hotel with the cosy café and the trendy club, which is open all night for partying. The "Dom-Bar" is a real trend-setter: throughout the day the shop offers the most trendy ski and snowboard brands and also invites you stay and enjoy a coffee or sandwich after your purchase. In the evenings the doors reopen, however then you will be directed towards the bar where you can saviour a nice beer or local wine with live music. In the neighbouring resorts Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell there are further apres ski locations near the valley station, such as the "Tipi Saas-Grund", for instance, directly next to the mountain station.
If you prefer a quieter form of apres ski, you can choose from a great number of cosy cafés and restaurants where you can let yourself be spoilt by tasty Swiss specialities. But you can also remain sporty after a day on the piste: a 6 km long toboggan run leads all the way down to the valley from the Hannig mountain. With its length of 11 km, an even longer toboggan run can be found on Kreuzbogen in Saas-Grund. The impressive via ferrata "Gorge Alpine" takes you through the canyons from Saas-Fee to Saas-Grund (only with professional mountain guides). Ice climbing lessons, ski tour try-outs, husky fun rides, snowshoe hikes on prepared trails, a boulder hall and bowling alley - this should leave no wishes unfulfilled.
From the winter season 2014/2015 onwards there will be an addition to the already existing "Aqua Allalin": a newly designed activity centre with indoor pool, sauna area, steam bath, outdoor jacuzzi and fitness floor.
The trails ins Saas-Fee are held rather short, due to the limited space available. However you will still find enough pistes popular and worth while seeing, as for instance the 6 km long high altitude trail in Sass-Fee or the 26 km long, partly very narrow Saas Valley track, starting in Balen and going via Almagell right up to Eiualp. You can easily explore this trail over the course of various days, as there are various bus stops along the route. Furthermore, there are also up to 12 km of skating trails available. In total, there are 38 km of cross-country trails available in the Saas Valley. For making use of the tracks, a day-pass has to be purchased at CHF 5, or a week pass can be purchased at CHF 19 (prices for guests with guest card).
