General information
Saas Grund, situated in the mountains and close to a skiing area, lies 1560 m above sea level and has 1300 inhabitants. Here, a wide variety of winter sports facilities are available, some of the more adventurous including waterfall climbing, off-piste hinterland skiing, traversing the Alpine Gorge, and mountaineering and hinterland skiing trips with the 'Weissmies' mountaineering school.
Saas Grund is a real hiking paradise for people of every age: more than 330 km of marked hiking trails, the famous Saas Alpine trail, and more than 60 km of marked cycling paths are at your disposal.
How to get there
by car:
From western Switzerland: motorway A9 from Lausanne - Vevey (or from northwestern Switzerland, motorway A12 Berne - Vevey), then take the motorway A9 - Sierre, main road - Visp - Saas Grund
From northwestern Switzerland : motorway A6 Berne - Thun - Spiez, main road Kandersteg (motorail through the Lötschberg Tunnel) - Goppenstein - Gampel - Visp - Saas Grund
From eastern and central Switzerland: Andermatt - Realp (Furka-Oberalp-Bahn motorail; in summer use the Furka pass) - Oberwald - Brig - Visp - Saas Grund
From Ticino in summer: Airolo - Nufenen pass - Ulrichen - Brig - Visp - Saas Grund
From southern Switzerland (Centovalli)/Italy (Milan): Domodossola - Simplon pass - Brig - Visp - Saas Grund
From Italy / France (Aosta, Mt. Blanc Tunnel): Aosta - Grand Saint Bernard tunnel (in summer use the pass) - Martigny, then motorway A9 - Sierre, main road - Visp - Saas Grund
By train:
From western Switzerland: SBB train from Lausanne - Visp, then take a bus to Saas Grund
From northwestern Switzerland: BLS train from Bern - Brig, then catch a bus to Saas Grund (on Saturdays there is an additional service from Goppenstein!)
From eastern and central Switzerland: Furka-Oberalp-Railway (FO) to Brig or Visp, then take a bus to Saas Grund
From southern Switzerland (Centovalli)/Italy (Milan): SBB train, Domodossola - Simplon - Brig, then catch a bus to Saas Grund
By plane:
International airports: Geneva and Zurich;
Regional airport: Sion
Summer resort
In Saas Grund, everyone is sure to have a great time. A rich program of events includes guided strolls through the village, game-watching, guided hiking tours and excursions, as well as all kinds of cultural events. In the nearby resort Saas Fee, skiing is even possible in summer. Saas Fee is also a centre of tourism and, if life in the rather quiet and close-knit village Saas Grund does not offer enough distraction at night, this is the place to go to enjoy first-rate entertainment of any kind.
Winter resort
Saas Grund offers its guests a wide choice of attractive winter sports facilities, including freestyle parks and halfpipes for snowboarders, beautiful winter hiking trails, natural and artificial ice rinks and a toboggan run 11 km long. In summer, hiking and cycling trails invite you to explore the magnificent Alpine countryside with mountain lakes, moors and shady woodlands.
