Sils Maria - Inspirational landscapes!
If an author dedicates a poem to a place, it can only be worth travelling there. Friedrich Nietzsche spent 7 summers in Sils Maria, and the resort didn't only give him inspiration for his poem named after it. It's not too much of a surprise: after all, Sils Maria is located beautifully in between the lakes Silsersee and Silvaplanersee, at the entrance to the romantic Flextal valley which is car-free and can only be reached by a horse-drawn bus. Since it wasn't only Nietzsche, but also other artists like Joseph Beuys or David Bowie who found their inspiration here, Sils Maria is called "THE cultural centre of Engadin". The museum "Friedrich-Nietzsche-Haus" serves as monument for the poet. But not only the creative ones are impressed by Sils Maria. The Engadin valley is also a paradise for winter sports fans, thanks to its close proximity to the famous ski areas around St. Moritz. The Furschellas, the local mountain, gives you direct access to the Corvatsch ski area with the highest mountain station in the Eastern Alps (3,303 m).
SkiThe lift pass "ENGADIN St. Moritz Mountain Pool" gives you access to a total of 347 km of piste incl. ski routes and 56 lifts (1,710 - 3,303 m). These can be found in the legendary ski areas Diavolezza, Coviglia and Corvatsch.
The local mountain in Sils-Maria, the Furtschellas, offers direct access to the ski area at Piz Corvatsch with its 120 km of piste, which offers a lot of challenges for ambitious skiers. While beginners prefer the slopes at Furtschella, the broad glacier pistes at Piz Corvatsch are a sporty treat. The unforgettable panoramic view of Piz Bernina, the only 4,000 metre high peak in the Eastern Alpes, is included of course! The variant pistes from the middle station Murtèl down to Alp Margun and the 9 km long piste from Corvatsch ofer Hahnensee lake down to St. Moritz are perfect for experienced skiers. Ambitious athletes will find a time measurement system, and freestylers will find their place in the Corvatsch Freestyle Park.
Après ski in and around St. Moritz has style. Preferrably, you'll enjoy your evening drink in a stylish bar, or have a good dinner in one of the countless restaurant. Here you'll be spoiled with specialities from Engadin, such as e.g. Capuns, Maluns or Pizzoccheri. In Sils-Maria, people meet for an Apéro at "Cetto Bar" or in "Kuhstall", where you can connect delicious food with après ski in a stylish mountain hut atmosphere.
Off piste, you can also make use of the various leisure time opportunities Sils-Maria has to offer. The resort is the perfect starting place for winter and snow shoe hikes to the surrounding areas, or for a romantic carriage ride in the Flex valley. The natural ice rink "Muot Marias" has two areas: one for ice hockey and one for ice skating and curling. At the Serlas Parc in S-chanf you can go climbing or bouldering. Additionally, you can also find several adventure pools, such as e.g. the Bellavita in Pontresina, the family pool Zernet or the Mineral Bath & Spa Samedan.
The entire ski region around Sils-Maria offers a cross-country trail network of approx. 230 km, so that cross-country skiers will find a true winter sports paradise that leaves nothing to be desired. The majority of slopes are of an easy or intermediate level.
Special emphasis has to be put on the most famous trail in Switzerland: the 42 km long marathon run between Maloja and S-chanf. Every year on the second Sunday in March, a major cross-country event takes place on this trail, and several thousands of cross-country skiers take part! A very beautiful part of the trail leads across the frozen Silserse lake as well as the Silvaplaner. and Champferersee lakes on a length of 12 km.
The tracks in the side valleys Roseg and Morteratsch have a special flair. You will find a real challenge in the longest trail of the region, in which you pass a length of 61 km. It leads from Maloja via Zuoz and S-chanf to Zernez. The high altitude trails offer the most beautiful views. Here you will find the intermediate "Alp Bondo" trail that is 8 km long and reaches from 2,096 tp 2,107 metres. as well as the high altitude trails nearby Maloja and Salvaplana.
Those who don't want to leave the trails late in the evening can choose between three flood-lit trails, such as e.g. the 2 km long night trail in St. Moritz.
