Summer resort
Very interesting is Zwingli's birth-house, which is now a museum. In one of the oldest wooden houses of Wildhaus, Huldrych Zwingli was born in 1484. The living rooms and the kitchen are on the ground floor while the dimly lit bedrooms are on the floor above. This log house has a very flat roof on which heavy stones are placed. For Zwingli the Reformation and humanism were profoundly related: he did not want to keep anything that could not be entirely justified by the Bible. In the summer of 1531 Zwingli made a draft for the transformation of the Confederation under the direction of Zurich and Berne. However, the Catholics could not be convinced and war became inevitable. In the second battle of Kappel, Huldrych Zwingli, present as a field chaplin, died on the 11 October 1531. The victors quartered and burned him and his ashes were dispersed. You will be surprised by the marvellous hiking area - the Churfirsten in the Toggenburg. Seven striking jagged peaks tower over the Toggenburg area. While they go down quite steeply towards Lake Walen, they turn their smoother side towards the Toggenburg and open up numerous hiking possibilities in unique mountain landscapes with an incomparable variety in plants and animals to visitors of Wildhaus, Unterwasser and Alt St Johann. The ascent to the Chäserrugg can easily be done by train. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view on the alpine peaks of four countries. And at your feet, you will see one of the loveliest hiking areas in Eastern Switzerland with mountain lakes, streams and shady forests.
Winter resort
The chairlifts to Oberdorf, Gamserrugg and Gamplüt provide access to a big walking and winter sports region. Cosy mountain inns and restaurants offer relaxation and enjoyment just as the nightclubs offer bustling entertainment. Moreover, there are many cultural and natural beauties to discover in the Toggenburg. Subject to alterations.
