About Wengen - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Wengen - more than skiing!
The famous village of Wengen is located in the Bernese Oberland at an altitude of approx. 1,274 m, and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding 4,000-metre mountains. Since 1893, Wengen is accessible only by the Wengernalp railway from Lauterbrunnen. The village doesn't have a direct connection to the road network and is free from cars. Not only the nostalgic wooden houses, cabins and shops, but also the outstanding location - which guarantees an above average number of sunshine hours - make Wengen an exceptional holiday destination.
Every high season, a number of cultural events, such as concerts, choir- and yodeling performances, take place in the village centre. But the charming mountain village also impresses in the field of winter sports: in January every year, the Lauberhorn ski competition takes place. This slope counts as one of the most challenging in the Alpine Ski World Cup. Cross-country skiers and winter hikers also get their money's worth here. With a total of approx. 100 km of hiking trails in the Jungfrau region, you will be more than impressed by the unique mountain landscape!
SkiThe "Grindelwald-Wengen" ski pass includes the Grindelwald-First and the Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen ski areas, with a total of 165 km of piste (incl. ski routes). Wengen is, thanks to the Männlichen mountain railway, well connected to the ski area. So is Interlaken, with a number of different mountain railways. A free ski bus to Grindelwald is also available for all guests in the Interlaken region. To use this, you simply need to present a valid ski, hiking or sledging pass for the Jungfrau area as well as a valid, filled-out guest card.
The two ski areas offers slopes for all tastes. "First", with its wide range of easier slopes is especially suitable for beginners. There is even a designated "low speed area". But the area is also a real insider tip for snowboarders. The "White Elements" snow park makes the snowboarders hearts beat faster.
The "First-Egg-Bort-Grindelwald" slope with a length of 6 km and an altitude difference of 1,118 m is demanding even for the most advanced skiers and counts for one of the most challenging slopes in the region. Advanced skiers are, of course, drawn to the Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen area, to try out the legendary Lauberhorn slope. Nevertheless, with a total of 102 km of piste in this ski area alone, less experienced skiers also get their full money's worth.
For those who aim higher, we recommend upgrading to the "Jungfrau" ski pass, with which a total of 206 km of piste with altitudes up to 2,970 m available to you. At the Schilthorn you will find pistes of varying levels of difficulty, large deep powder snow areas, the "Mürren-Schilthorn Funpark" and much more.
Also in the domain of après ski, Wengen has something to offer. A number of cafés and restaurants are available for the ones looking for a relaxing and pleasant end to the day on the slopes. Take a nightcap at "Sunstar" for example, and enjoy live music in front of the fireplace. Fans of classical après ski will also find a wide range of bars, for example "Hasenstall" or "Pickel Bar". In the "Blue Monkey Club" the party goes on until late into the night.
In Wengen, sport activities are not restricted to the slopes. The Jungfrau region for example, is a real paradise for fans of sledding. In Grindelwald alone there are a total of 70 km of toboggan runs. The "Big Pintenfritz" is 15 km long. The "Fox Run" in Wengen is 4.5 m from the Wengernalp mountain to the valley. The 3 km long "Eiger Run" is lit up in the evenings.
You can also explore the mountainous surroundings through winter hiking trails or snowshoe hiking trails. Or enjoy some ice-skating on the rink in the village centre.
Grindelwald and Wengen offer you a total of 27 km of cross-country tracks. Most tracks are non-demanding. The "Lauterbrunnen-Stechelberg-Lauterbrunnen" track, with its 12 km, is one of the longest tracks in the region. It follows the white Lütschine river and passes high waterfalls and finally ends in the Hinterer Lauterbrunnental.
Especially recommended is the high altitude track "Bussalp" in Grindelwald, at an altitude of 1,800 m, it offers a fantastic panoramic view. Another highlight is the floodlit track in the glacier ravine of Grindelwald at an altitude of 1,000 m.
