About Zermatt - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Zermatt is a municipality belonging to the district Visp in the Swiss canton of Valais. The village is situated at the end Mattertal valley at an altitude of 1620 meters, at the foot of the highest peaks in Switzerland. It spans a distance of 10 km from Step Theodore border with Italy. Zermatt is famous for mountain activities and ski resorts that are found here.
The locality was known as one concerned with farming but the area has developed rapidly after some people showed interest in climbing, leading to many tourist facilities.
The village was discovered by several climbers including most notably Edward Whymper, who conquered the Matterhorn mountain, making the city so well known. Matterhorn Mountain was one of the few remaining unconquered until 1865 objectives and expedition climbers ended dramatically with only three of the seven climbers leave at first.
Zematt is the starting point for several hiking trails including the famous one that ends in Chamonix, France. All through the passes and spectacular railroad known as the railroad Gornergratbahn and is located at the highest altitude in Europe, 3089 meters.
Ski area located at high altitude, is divided into four sectors: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee.
