About BaselDetails and images of Basel

            Basel

Basel is a city with a very old, medieval center, a carnival that can compete with those of Venice or Rio de Janeiro at any time, and several world-class art museums built by renowned architects such as Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Herzog & From Meuron.

            Tourist spots

Basel is a successful combination of new and old architecture. If you stroll the streets of the city, you will see many modern buildings, such as Messeturm, the tallest building in the city or Messeplatz, exhibition center, signed Herzog & de Meuron. The two architects originally from Basel have made their mark throughout the city and they have also renovated the Basel Museum of Cultures, whose roof appears to be clad in bright black scales.

The town hall is not the only red building in the city. On a hill in the center of the city, stands the Münster Cathedral, built of sandstone, in Baroque and Romanesque style almost 1000 years ago. Following a powerful earthquake in the 14th century, the Romanesque part of the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt.

Many stores are closed on Sundays, however, you will find supermarkets that keep open until 10:00 pm, but no sign of non-stop.

For those looking for fun, there are several alternative pubs in Kleinbasel: Grenzwert, cocktail bars, Baltazar, and one of the most renowned electronic music clubs in Switzerland, Nordstern.
